"Adventures at the cell surface: from fertilization to malaria and beyond!"
Inaugural lecture: Professor Gavin Wright, Chair in Microbial Biochemistry, Hull York Medical School and the University of York
11 October 2023. Church Lane Lecture Theatre, University of York. 5.30pm-6.30pm (followed by a drinks reception)
Proteins that are displayed on the surface of our cells have a crucial role in biology because they exchange instructive information with their immediate environment, act as entry receptors for pathogens such as viruses, and are excellent drug targets. In this inaugural lecture Professor Gavin Wright will outline some of his research highlights on a journey to discover the role of these special proteins which will include seminal discoveries on how the parasite that causes malaria recognises and invades our red blood cells, and how sperm and egg recognise each other.
Book online through the HYMS website.

"Clinical Anatomy: rejecting the "basic" in medical education Inaugural lecture". Professor Peter Bazira, Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Medical Education, Hull York Medical School.
25 October 2023. Middleton Hall, University of Hull
5.30-6.30pm (followed by a drinks reception)
Anatomy is the foundation of medical practice, yet it is commonly misperceived as a field which is saturated and stagnant.
In this inaugural lecture Professor Peter Bazira will challenge this misconception by reflecting on his own non-linear, non-traditional, and mildly chaotic professorial route in clinical anatomy and medical education and sharing how he has provided leadership and advanced his career. He will explore the place of clinical anatomy in modern medical education, shedding light on its significant impact on the development of competent healthcare professionals. He will delve into the evolution of pedagogical approaches for clinical anatomy, emphasising the integration of physical resources, clinical reasoning, technology, and innovative teaching methods to facilitate learning. He will also discuss the importance of whole-body donation - tackling the question "why use the dead to teach care for the living?" in the context of modern medical education.
